It soon blooms into a romance, but House feels it is affecting their medical judgement and tries to make them break up. Wilson slowly starts to recover from Amber's untimely death, but begins to reevaluate his life and to contemplate resigning from his post at the hospital. House's original regret over his role in Amber's death seems to have worn off as instead of being supportive, he merely tries to convince Wilson that he is overreacting to the situation. Meanwhile, the team tries to deal with their grief over Kutner's sudden suicide. Gill of The Sunday Times felt that the show had "lost its sense of humour". However, the patient's condition worsens and it becomes difficult to treat him at his home.
The character type has arguably worn out its welcome through clumsy handling and overexposure, but at its best, it's responsible for some of TV's most charismatic and perversely charming leads. It seems that Debbie only pays a visit to people if they are about to die and does so with alarming accuracy. While House dismisses Morgan as a nut job, he is intrigued by her theory on the kiss-of-death cat, and sets out to disprove it. When Morgan falls seriously ill, he and the team are forced to get to the bottom of both mysteries.
In the Season 4 finale, after a massive bus accident left House without recollection of the accident, he and the team put the pieces of his memory together and discover Wilson’s girlfriend Amber was on the bus with him and was fatally injured. Eventually, Chase plans to propose to Cameron, but when she learns about his plans, she starts making excuses not to go away with him. Shortly thereafter, House takes over the planning of Chase's bachelor party, hiring a stripper and hosting it at Wilson's apartment. While at the bachelor party, Chase does a body shot off of Karamel, a stripper suggested by the Amber hallucination who was also at Wilson's bachelor party for his third wife.
She later stops tormenting House when she decides that making his life miserable won't do any good. At Cameron's urging, the team takes the case of a suicidal man (Martin Henderson) who suffers from excruciating chronic pain—pain that mirrors House's. Meanwhile, Cuddy discovers that caring for her new foster baby leaves her little time to run the hospital; and Foreman and Thirteen continue to explore their complicated relationship as they work together on their Huntington's disease drug trial. A man (Željko Ivanek) takes over Cuddy's office and holds House, Thirteen, and several patients hostage, demanding a diagnosis. To make sure that the doctors are not going to sedate him, he forces Thirteen to act as a guinea pig for his treatments. House has to find a way to end the standoff before Thirteen becomes seriously ill, and before SWAT start their assault.
House and the team take on the case of a woman (Judith Scott) who collapsed in the middle of a cooking class. When they learn that the patient gave up her career as a highly renowned cancer researcher in order to pursue her own personal happiness, the members of the team question their own happiness (or lack thereof). Meanwhile, Thirteen begins to suffer serious and life-threatening reactions to her experimental Huntington's disease clinical drug trial, and Cuddy retaliates against House and gives him a taste of his own medicine. Edelstein was disappointed at the circumstances, but she swiftly moved on to new opportunities. She told TV Guide that she liked getting to stretch herself artistically and play new kinds of characters after seven years in the same role.
However, just as they are about to dismiss his case, the patient's condition takes a drastic turn for the worse, and House grapples with his past and his own personal beliefs. The team takes on the case of a 16-year-old factory manager (Emily Rios) who collapsed when her lungs suddenly filled with fluid while at work. The teenager informs House and team that she has been an emancipated minor ever since her parents died. Meanwhile, Foreman asks for House's permission to work on a clinical trial and House rejects his proposal. In an effort to prove himself capable of working without House's supervision, Foreman takes on his own pediatric case. But when the unexplained illness brings the child (Kyle Red Silverstein) to the brink of death, Foreman is left questioning his ability to work free from House's custody.
House, not wanting to think he couldn't see it coming, reaches the conclusion that it was murder, until he looks through a bunch of photos and finds one showing a lone Kutner with a blank expression - in contrast to the smile he wore in the other photos when he was with other people. Although House was originally scheduled to be shown on Tuesdays during Season 5, at mid-Season, the time slots for House and American Idol were switched on the prime time schedule, putting House's new episodes in the 8 PM EST slot on Mondays. Later, FOX Broadcasting Company stated in this Network Prime Time Schedule [1], that House would premiere its fifth Season at 8 PM EST on September 2, 2008. However, the first episode didn't premiere until two weeks later, September 16. An older woman, Charlotte (Colleen Camp), who has been taking care of her husband Eddie (Meat Loaf) for the last six months, is rushed to Princeton-Plainsboro for treatment after collapsing at Eddie's deathbed from respiratory failure. The case is further complicated as Eddie's condition improves while Charlotte's deteriorates.
